How to fax from an iPhone

Yes, you can fax from an iPhone with a fax website in Safari or a fax app. Add your pages, type the fax number and send. In general, the website or app passes your pages to a fax service, which dials the fax machine.

If your pages are already a file, such as a PDF in the Files app, you can send them from Safari without installing anything. If they're on paper, scan them with the Files app first, or let a fax app scan and send them in one go.

What you need

A fax website or app, such as FaxFair or FaxZero, doesn't need a fax number of your own to send. For a cover sheet, use our free fax cover sheet maker and save the sheet as a PDF.

Send a fax from your iPhone without an app

On our website, faxfair.com, you upload up to 10 PDFs or photos, up to 100 pages in all, type a US or Canadian fax number and pay, with no account. As of November 2026, a fax of up to 40 pages costs $2.49, and one of 41 to 100 pages costs $6.99. The cover sheet is free and doesn't count as a page. We only charge your card when the fax is delivered. If the fax fails, we cancel the payment and you aren't charged.

Our website can't take HEIC photos, the HEIF format Apple recommends for the iPhone camera. Save them as JPG first, or send them from the FaxFair app. To make new photos JPEG, open Settings, tap Camera, tap Formats, then tap Most Compatible.

FaxZero and GotFreeFax send short faxes free to the U.S. and Canada, as of November 2026. FaxZero sends up to 3 pages plus a cover page, up to 5 free faxes a day, and puts its branding on the free cover page. It accepts DOC, DOCX or PDF files. GotFreeFax sends up to 3 pages per fax and 2 free faxes a day, and takes PDF, Doc or JPG files.

  1. Get your pages into a file Scan paper pages with the Files app (Apple's steps are below), or find the PDF you already have in Files.
  2. Open the fax website in Safari Fill in your details and the fax number you're sending to, with the area code.
  3. Upload the file and send Pick the saved scan from Files, then follow the website's steps to send it.

Email to fax from your iPhone

Email to fax services send a fax from the email app on your phone, once you have an account. You write to the fax number at the service's address and attach your document. At eFax, the address is the fax number followed by @send.efax.com. As of November 2026, Fax.Plus offers email to fax only on its paid plans. Email to fax suits people who fax often.

Our guide on how to fax from email compares what eFax, Fax.Plus and iFax each need, from the address format to the plan.

How to scan a document with your iPhone

These are Apple's steps for the Files app's scanner, published February 13, 2026.

  1. Open Files, tap the More button, then tap Scan Documents.
  2. Point the camera at the page. In Auto mode it scans by itself, or you can tap the Shutter button or press a volume button.
  3. Drag the corners so the scan fits the page, then tap Keep Scan.
  4. Scan each of the other pages the same way, and tap Done when you have them all.
  5. Choose a location, then tap Save, and the scan is ready to upload.

In iOS 26 you can also choose the flash or an image filter. The Notes app scans the same way if you open a note, tap the Attachment button and then tap Scan Documents.

To send a fax from Safari now, use this website. Type the fax number, upload your pages and pay on Stripe's checkout page, without the app or an account. If your pages are on paper, the FaxFair iPhone app scans them with the camera, and your first fax in the app is free, up to 40 pages.

Send a fax with a fax app

A fax app does the whole job on your phone, from scanning the pages with the camera to sending the fax.

  1. Get a fax app Search the App Store for a fax app, and check how it charges before you pay. Many fax apps sell weekly or monthly subscriptions, while some, like FaxFair, charge per fax.
  2. Scan your pages Scan each page with the app's camera, laying it flat in good light so the text comes out sharp.
  3. Add a cover sheet if you need one If the app has a cover page, use it. Otherwise make one with our free cover sheet maker, save it as a PDF, and add it as the first page if the app lets you add a PDF.
  4. Type the fax number Include the area code, and check each digit against the form, letter or website where you found it.
  5. Send and check that it was delivered Tap Send. FaxFair shows the status as it changes, so you can see when the fax is delivered. Only then tell the office it arrived.

Fax app subscriptions, and how to cancel one

As of November 2026, the five fax apps we checked on the App Store all sell weekly, monthly or yearly plans. Their weekly plans are listed at $2.99 to $14.99. Apple says auto-renewable subscriptions renew at the end of each period until you cancel, so a weekly plan bought for one fax can keep charging.

To cancel one on an iPhone, Apple gives these steps.

  1. In Settings, tap your name, then tap Subscriptions.
  2. Tap the subscription, then tap Cancel Subscription. You might need to scroll down to find the button.
  3. If there's no Cancel button, or you see an expiration message in red text, the subscription is already canceled.

Use a fax machine at a store or library

To skip scanning, take your pages to a store or library. FedEx Office, The UPS Store, Office Depot and Staples list fax services on their websites. FedEx Office says prices vary by store, and The UPS Store says they may vary by location, so call ahead. King County Library System in Washington lets you fax free at its Library Document Stations.
