How to fax without a fax machine

You can fax without a fax machine by using a fax website, a phone app, or the fax machine at a store or library. Websites and apps send your document over the internet to a fax service, which dials the fax number for you.

Use a fax website when your document is already a file, and a phone app when the pages are on paper. A store or library suits anyone who'd rather not send it from a phone or computer.

1. Use a fax website

A fax website works on a computer or a phone, as long as your document is a file you can upload.

You can send a fax from this website without an account. At faxfair.com you upload up to 10 PDFs or photos, up to 100 pages in all, and type a US or Canadian fax number. As of November 2026, a fax of up to 40 pages costs $2.49, and one of 41 to 100 pages costs $6.99. We only charge your card when the fax is delivered. If the fax fails, we cancel the payment and you aren't charged.

FaxZero sends free faxes to the U.S. and Canada, up to 3 pages plus a cover page and up to 5 a day. FaxZero puts its branding on the free cover page. Its paid option, for longer faxes, costs $3.29 per fax for up to 25 pages, paid with PayPal (prices as listed on October 30, 2026).

  1. Get your document into a file If it's on paper, scan it with your phone. If it's already on your computer, save it as a PDF.
  2. Open a fax website Check its limits before you start, such as how many pages it takes, which countries it sends to and what it costs.
  3. Fill in both sides Type your details and the fax number you're sending to, with the area code.
  4. Upload and send Add your file, then follow the website's steps to send it.
  5. Check that it was delivered Look for a delivered message or email, and if it failed, check the number and try again.

2. Use a fax app on your phone

When your pages are on paper, a phone app saves a step, because it scans them with your camera and sends the fax itself. You don't need a computer or a scanner.

Check how the app charges before you pay, since some fax apps sell subscriptions that renew until you cancel. FaxFair, our iPhone app, charges per fax instead, and your first fax is free, up to 40 pages, once per iPhone. The app also lets you buy a US fax number if you need to receive faxes.

3. Use a fax machine at a store

FedEx Office, The UPS Store, Office Depot and Staples all list fax services on their own websites.

Call ahead to check the price and hours, then bring your pages, the fax number and a cover sheet if the office wants one.

4. Use a public library

Some public libraries can send a fax, and each one sets its own rules.

Search your library's website for "fax" or call the front desk before you go.
