How to fax from email

To fax from email, you email your document to the fax number followed by your fax service's domain, such as [email protected]. You need an account with a service such as eFax, Fax.Plus or iFax, and a paid plan after any free trial.

A traditional fax goes over the phone network to a fax number, so an email can't reach that number without a service in between. In general, the service turns your attachment into a fax and dials the number for you. If you only have one PDF in your inbox to fax, you can skip the account and send it from a fax website instead.

What each email to fax service needs

We read what eFax, Fax.Plus and iFax say about email to fax on their own websites on November 1, 2026. All three need an account, and each has its own address format and rules.

As each service's own pages listed them. The example fax number, 212-555-0142, is made up. On its email to fax page, iFax also mentions [email protected], but its two examples put the fax number before @ifaxapp.com, so we show that format.

How to send a fax by email

  1. Open an account and check the plan Fax.Plus offers email to fax only on paid plans, and eFax and iFax each offer a 7-day free trial before a paid plan. At Fax.Plus, the switches are under Settings, Faxing, Email to Fax, Configure. Turn on "Ability to Send Fax via Email", and "Include Email Content in Fax" if you want the email body faxed as a cover sheet.
  2. Send from the right address Fax.Plus and iFax both ask you to send from the address on your account. If you use another one, iFax emails you to say the fax didn't go. eFax's Gmail page says any Gmail account you're signed in to works.
  3. Type the fax number in the To field Use your service's format from the table, such as [email protected]. We couldn't read eFax's example address, so check its page for whether the number starts with a 1. Check each digit against the form or letter that gave you the number.
  4. Attach your document A PDF works at all three services. At eFax, several attachments go out together as one fax.
  5. Write the cover page in the body eFax and iFax turn the body into the cover page, and iFax also uses the subject line. Fax.Plus does it when "Include Email Content in Fax" is on. Write what a cover sheet would say, such as who the fax is for, how many pages it has and your phone number.
  6. Send, then check your inbox Fax.Plus emails you a delivery status that says whether the fax went through. Before you tell the office it arrived, check that your service shows it as delivered.

If you'd rather send a full cover sheet, make one with our free fax cover sheet maker and attach the PDF with your document. We'd leave the email body empty, since eFax and iFax turn the body into a cover page. At Fax.Plus, turn off "Include Email Content in Fax" instead.

How to fax from Gmail or Outlook

With an eFax account, these are eFax's steps for sending a fax from Gmail.

  1. Click Compose, as you would for any email.
  2. In the To field, type the fax number followed by @send.efax.com.
  3. Click the paperclip icon to attach your file, or the Drive icon for a file in Google Drive.
  4. Type a message in the body for the cover page, then click Send.

The iFax steps for Gmail are the same, with its own address. In Outlook, eFax says to start a new email, attach the file with the paperclip icon and click Send. For Outlook, iFax says it works only from an email account registered on iFax.

Faxing one email attachment without an account

If an office emailed you a form to fax back, or you need to fax one PDF from your inbox, an email to fax plan is more than you need. Save the attachment, then upload it on a fax website in your browser.

Our website, faxfair.com, sends the saved file to a US or Canadian fax number without an account. It takes up to 10 PDF, JPG, PNG, WEBP or TIFF files, up to 100 pages in all, so save a Word document as a PDF first. As of November 2026, a fax of up to 40 pages costs $2.49, and one of 41 to 100 pages costs $6.99. The cover sheet is free and doesn't count as a page. We only charge your card when the fax is delivered. If the fax fails, we cancel the payment and you aren't charged.

To pay nothing, FaxZero and GotFreeFax send faxes of up to 3 pages free to the U.S. and Canada, as of November 2026. FaxZero allows 5 free faxes a day, takes DOC, DOCX or PDF files and puts its branding on the free cover page. GotFreeFax allows 2 a day and takes PDF, Doc or JPG files.

For sending alone, a plan pays off only if you fax often. As of November 2026, Fax.Plus's Basic plan, which includes email to fax, costs $83.99 billed annually. Monthly billing is offered too, but we couldn't confirm its price from that page. As of November 2026, FaxZero's paid option costs $3.29 for up to 25 pages. At faxfair.com, a fax of up to 40 pages costs $2.49. Against a year of Basic billed annually, paying per fax costs less for up to 25 faxes at FaxZero, or up to 33 at faxfair.com.

Our guide to sending a one-time fax has more ways to send a single fax without a plan.

For pages on paper, our guide on how to fax without a fax machine compares apps, stores and libraries.

To fax that attachment now, send it from this website. Upload the file, type the fax number and pay on Stripe's checkout page, without an account. If your pages are on paper, the FaxFair iPhone app scans them with the camera.

Questions

Can you fax from email?

What email address do I use to send a fax?

The fax number, followed by your service's domain. As of November 2026, eFax uses the number then @send.efax.com, and iFax the number then @ifaxapp.com. Fax.Plus uses a plus sign, the country code and the number, then @fax.plus. Each address works only with an account at that service.

Can I fax from Gmail for free?

No, not past a free trial. As of November 2026, eFax and iFax each offer a 7-day free trial, and eFax's trial covers a limited number of pages. Fax.Plus's free plan doesn't include email to fax. To send one short fax free, download the attachment and send it from FaxZero or GotFreeFax, up to 3 pages.

Can I receive faxes by email?

Yes, with a fax number that emails each fax to you. As of November 2026, you can get a US fax number on faxfair.com for 7 days ($4.99), 30 days ($9.99) or 1 year ($59.99). We email each fax sent to it to you as a PDF, or as a link to your inbox page if it's over 10 MB. None renews by itself. To send from faxfair.com, you upload the file instead of emailing it.
