How to find the right IRS fax number
There's no single IRS fax number, because each form, notice and IRS office has its own. Use the number printed on your IRS notice or letter, or, for a form you're sending on your own, the one in that form's instructions on IRS.gov.
For many forms the number also depends on your state. We copied each number below from the IRS.gov page named next to it on November 1, 2026. The IRS says the numbers can change without notice, so check that page again on the day you send.
Where to find the fax number for your form or letter
Look in these places, in this order, and use the first fax number you find.
- The IRS notice or letter If the IRS wrote and asked for something by fax, use the number in that letter. That goes even for a form with a fax number of its own. Form 14039 lists 855-807-5720, for example, but the IRS says to use the fax number on your notice if you're answering one.
- The instructions for your form On IRS.gov, open the instructions for the form and look for a Where To File chart or an "Apply by fax" section. The charts for Forms 2848, 8821 and 2553 give a fax number for each group of states.
- The form's About page The instructions for Forms 2848 and 8821 send you to the form's page, such as IRS.gov/Form2848, for changes under "Recent Developments". Some of these About pages, like the one for Form 3911, carry the fax numbers themselves.
If none of them gives a fax number, don't borrow one from another form. Mail it, or use the online option its instructions name.

Form SS-4 and your EIN
The IRS calls this fax service Fax-TIN. It takes faxes 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and the IRS says you'll generally get your EIN back by fax within 4 business days. It faxes the EIN back to the number you give on the form, so put yours on it.
If you're in the United States or a U.S. territory, the IRS recommends applying online instead, where you get the EIN and can use it immediately.
If you don't have a fax number to get the EIN back on, you can get one on faxfair.com, from $4.99 for 7 days as of November 2026. Pick a length that outlasts the IRS's 4 business days. We email faxes sent to it to you as a PDF. If you also send the form from faxfair.com, use "Send a fax from this number" on the inbox page. Once the number is active, the fax goes out from it. It shows at the top of each page, and on the cover sheet's Fax line if you add one.
Forms 2848 and 8821 by state
From the Where To File Chart in the instructions for Form 2848 and for Form 8821. Both charts give the same numbers. The IRS generally records powers of attorney on its CAF system, and the third row goes to its International CAF Team.

The IRS must receive Form 4506-T within 120 days of the date you signed it, or it rejects the form. Don't count on getting the transcript back by fax, since in June 2019 the IRS announced it would stop faxing transcripts to taxpayers and third parties. Limits on faxing the IRS
- A typed or electronic signature on Form 2848 or 8821. A faxed copy needs a handwritten signature. If you signed electronically, submit it online at IRS.gov/Submit2848 or IRS.gov/Submit8821.
- A tax return. We found no fax number for one. The IRS page on where to file paper returns lists mailing addresses only, as of November 2026. E-file or mail your return, unless an IRS letter gives you a fax number for it.
- The wrong form on a number. The SS-4 numbers take EIN applications only, and the Form 3911 numbers take Form 3911 only. The Form 8886 number isn't for general use, and it takes one Form 8886 per fax, up to 100 pages.
- Form 4506-C. The form says an authorized IVES participant faxes it to the IRS with an approved IVES cover sheet, so we've left its IVES fax numbers out of our table.
- The same form sent two ways. Form 14039 asks you to choose online, mail or fax, not all of them. The IRS page for Forms 2848 and 8821 says not to submit a form online if you already faxed or mailed it.
What to put on the cover sheet
On its page about faxing Form 8886, the IRS lists what the cover sheet should say. Using the same list for other IRS faxes is our suggestion, not an IRS rule.
- A subject that names the form, such as "Form 2848"
- Your name, title, phone number and address
- The taxpayer's name
- The date
- The number of pages, counting the cover sheet
If you're answering a letter, we'd add its notice or letter number to the subject. Leave your Social Security number and EIN off the cover sheet, as the IRS asks on that page, since they belong on the form itself. For Form 14039, the IRS also asks you to mark the cover sheet "Confidential".
You can fill in a free IRS fax cover sheet online or download one. Nothing you type is sent to us or anyone else, and nothing is saved.
Once you have the number, you can fax your IRS form from this website. Upload the PDFs, type the fax number and add a free cover sheet. As of November 2026, a fax of up to 40 pages costs $2.49, and we only charge your card when the fax is delivered. If it fails, we cancel the payment and you aren't charged. For forms still on paper, the FaxFair iPhone app scans them with the camera.
Send a fax onlineKeep proof the fax went through
On its Form 8886 page, the IRS says it won't send a confirmation or receipt for those faxes. It asks you to check your fax transmission log to see that every page went through, and to keep a copy as your receipt. We'd do the same for any IRS fax, and keep the log with a copy of exactly what you sent.
Our guide to how long it takes to send a fax shows what a transmission report lists and how to set a machine to print one after every fax.
If you send from faxfair.com, a private status page shows the fax's progress until it's delivered or fails. Once it says delivered, take a screenshot or print the page, and keep it with the receipt Stripe emails you for the payment. That page shows our delivery status, not a receipt from the IRS.
The IRS's CP2000 page asks you to understand an online fax service's privacy and security policies before you use one. We delete your files from our servers when the fax is delivered or fails, and our privacy policy lists the basic details we keep for 90 days.
If you'd rather use a fax machine at a store or library, see where you can fax something near you, and ask for the confirmation page before you leave.
Our guide on how to fax without a fax machine compares a fax website, a phone app, a store and a library.
Questions
How do I fax the IRS?
Use the fax number on your IRS letter, or the one in your form's instructions on IRS.gov. Sign the form by hand if it's Form 2848 or 8821. We suggest a cover sheet with the form number, your name and phone, the taxpayer's name, the date and the page count, as the IRS lists for Form 8886. Leave your SSN and EIN off it, then send and keep the transmission report.
Does the IRS have a fax number for tax returns?
Not one we could find. As of November 2026, the IRS page on where to file paper tax returns lists mailing addresses only, with no fax numbers. E-file or mail your return, unless an IRS notice or letter gives you a fax number to send it to.
What is the IRS fax number for an EIN application?
For Form SS-4, it's 855-641-6935 as of November 2026, if your legal residence or principal place of business, office or agency is in one of the 50 states or D.C. Otherwise it's 855-215-1627 from inside the United States, or 304-707-9471 from outside it. The IRS recommends applying online if you can.
What is the fax number for Form 2848 (power of attorney)?
It depends on your state. As of November 2026, the instructions list 855-214-7519 for 27 states and D.C., including Florida, New York and Pennsylvania, and 855-214-7522 for 23 states, including California and Texas. From an APO or FPO address, a U.S. territory or another country, it's 855-772-3156, or 304-707-9785 from outside the United States.
How do I know if the IRS received my fax?
Keep your fax transmission report and check that every page went through. On its Form 8886 page, the IRS says it won't send a confirmation or receipt for those faxes, and that your transmission log is your receipt, as of November 2026.
