How long does it take to send a fax?

Fax services we read put a typed page at 15 seconds to about a minute on the line. One of them, Notifyre, also tells you to expect a wait of 1 to 2 minutes a page. Photos, shading, a busy number or a slow machine at the other end add a lot to how long it takes to send a fax. By Documo's undated figure, 10 typed pages take about 7 to 10 minutes.

How long a fax takes per page

In an article dated November 3, 2025, Notifyre says a page generally takes about 15 seconds to transmit. It also says to expect a wait of 1 to 2 minutes a page. Its 50-page example comes to about 50 minutes, which is about a minute a page by our arithmetic. The article doesn't say how the 15 seconds and the longer wait differ. Documo's undated help page puts black text on a white background at 40 to 60 seconds a page.

The clock starts before the first page goes. Your machine or service dials, the other machine answers, and the two test the line. Under ITU-T Recommendation T.30, the standard for fax calls on the phone network, the answering machine lists what it can do. The sending machine then picks its settings from that list. Epson's guide for its WF-C878R printers says the call ends with an error if the other machine doesn't pick up within 50 seconds of dialing.

Our guide to how a fax machine works walks through that handshake and the modem speeds the two machines can choose from.

What we measured ourselves

When we tested FaxFair in October 2026, our first real test fax took 26 seconds on the line. It was one page, sent on October 30 between two of our own fax numbers. That's one test, not an average or a promise about your fax.

When we sent an 8-page test fax on November 1, 2026, it took about 4 minutes. The status page on faxfair.com gives an estimate from the page count. It says a fax usually takes about 30 seconds a page, and about 4 minutes for a page sent as a photo. It also shows how long your fax has been on the line. That estimate isn't a promise either.

What makes a fax take longer, and what to do

The first three causes in this table are up to you, so you can fix them before you send.

What slows a fax down, why, and what you can do about it
What slows itWhy it adds timeWhat you can do
More pagesEach page adds its own time. Notifyre puts 50 pages at about 50 minutes.Send only the pages the office asked for.
Photos, gradients and busy graphicsDocumo says color gradients, busy graphics and photos can take much longer than plain text.Fax the original file if you have it, not a photo of the printout. Leave out pictures nobody needs.
A higher resolution settingThe fax standard T.4 has optional settings with 2 or 4 times as many lines down the page, by our arithmetic. Canon's manual for the MF729Cdw, MF726Cdw and MF628Cw says a higher setting takes longer to send.Use the standard setting for typed pages, and a higher one only for small print.
A slower machine at either endThe call can only go as fast as both machines allow. Brother's setting for VoIP, phone service over the internet, cuts the modem speed to 9,600 bits per second to minimize errors. We'd expect a longer call as a result. You can't speed up the other machine. Brother says you may prefer to use its VoIP setting only when needed, unless interference on your line is a recurring problem.
A poor lineNotifyre lists the recipient's line quality as a factor. T.30 says that after a page isn't received well, more pages may follow if the sender repeats its line test.Try again later, or from another line.
A busy number or no answerNothing moves until the next try. One Canon fax manual lists redial intervals of 2 to 99 minutes. Dropbox says it can slow things down if your recipient has a high transmission volume at the time you send.Check that the number is a fax line, and call the office if it stays busy.

Fax used to be much slower. In the IEEE's milestone record, the "three minute facsimile" is the Group 2 standard of 1976. The "one-minute facsimile" is Group 3, recommended in 1980. Our history of the fax machine covers how it got here.

Machines and services retry on their own. One Canon fax manual lists a setting of 1 to 10 redials. FaxZero's undated FAQ says it tries 5 times before giving up and emailing you a failure notice. Documo's undated page says it tries each fax 3 times in all, and that an account admin or owner can change that schedule.

Some stores and libraries also charge by the page. Our guide to how much it costs to fax has the prices we found.

How to know your fax went through

On a fax machine, the proof is the transmission report, which many people call the fax confirmation page. Brother's guide for the MFC-L2750DW says you can use its Transmission Verification Report as proof that you sent a fax. The report lists the other party's name or fax number and the date and time. It also shows how long the fax took, the number of pages and whether it went through. When it did, OK appears next to RESULT. In Canon's manual for the MF729Cdw, the TX Result Report shows OK, or NG with an error code when a fax fails.

Check the setting before you count on it. On Brother's MFC-L2750DW, the factory setting prints the report only when a fax fails. Canon's MF729Cdw manual lets you choose every fax, errors only or none. If you need proof, set the machine to print a report after every fax, and check that its page count matches what you sent.

At a store, ask for the confirmation before you leave. FedEx Office says its machines provide confirmation that the fax was sent, and that you can get a printed confirmation for your records.

Online fax services send the confirmation to you. Dropbox says its email comes within a minute or two of the fax finishing and says whether it went through. If it doesn't arrive, check your spam folder. FaxZero emails you when a fax is delivered and shows you a private status page link only once, so save it.

On faxfair.com, a private status page shows your fax's progress until it's delivered or fails. Once it says delivered, take a screenshot and keep it with a copy of what you sent.

In the FaxFair app, the status changes as the fax goes. If you allow notifications, the app can tell you when it's delivered or fails. A fax can fail if the line is busy, no fax machine answers or the number isn't a fax line. The app says why, with a Try again or Change number key.

A successful transmission report shows that the other machine took your pages. It can't show that anyone has read them, so for anything with a deadline, we'd also call the office.

If you faxed the IRS, our IRS fax number guide explains what to keep as proof.

To send a fax today without a fax machine, use this website. Upload your PDFs or photos and type the number, with no account. As of November 2026, a fax of up to 40 pages costs $2.49, to any fax number in the US or Canada. For paper pages, the FaxFair iPhone app scans them with the camera.

Questions

How long does it take for a fax to go through?

Fax services we read put a typed page at 15 seconds to about a minute on the line. Documo's figure of 40 to 60 seconds is undated. Notifyre also tells you to expect a wait of 1 to 2 minutes a page, in an article dated November 2025. Photos, a busy number or a slower machine at the other end can stretch a fax to many minutes.

How do I know if my fax went through?

Check the transmission report, which many people call the fax confirmation page. It should show a successful result, such as OK, and the number of pages you sent. On Brother's MFC-L2750DW, the factory setting prints it only when a fax fails, so turn it on for every fax if you need proof. Online fax services email you or show a status page instead.

What does a fax confirmation page show?

It shows where the fax went, when, how long it took, how many pages went and whether it went through. That's the list on the Transmission Verification Report of Brother's MFC-L2750DW. Canon's TX Result Report, in its MF729Cdw manual, shows OK when a fax was sent, or NG with an error code when it failed.

Why is my fax taking so long?

Photos or gradients, a high resolution setting or a slow machine at the other end can each slow a fax down. So can a poor line or a busy number. The call can't run faster than the other machine allows. A busy number means waiting for the next try, and one Canon fax manual lists 2 to 99 minutes between tries.
